I actually work in Observatory Cape Town which I suppose you could say is the start of the southern suburbs. Observatory lies below Groote Schuur hospital where the worlds first heart transplant happened. Observatory together with neighboring Mowbray have more NGO’s than anywhere else in the country.
Observatory, or Obz, is quite arty, has plenty of clubs and restaurants and there is a huge amount of backpackers accommodation in the area. Because of the backpackers and the NGO’s that often have foreign volunteers you always hear German, French, Italian etc
